Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) Information

Kelowna RCMP and the City of Kelowna, have 13 cameras are convinced their Closed Circuit TV’s have reduced crime significantly and plan installing a number of additional cameras.
The significance of the cameras is in reducing the severity of incidents and in many cases eliminating vandalism such as window breakage etc. by the cameras’ presence. Window replacement is often less than your deductible and could be the cost of your one time CCTV participation.
RBC’s recent front door vehicle impact verifies your vulnerability.
The attached photos are of a bank robber, captured on CCTV. The proposed cameras will identify suspects and their activities as they enter and leave your premises. This information can then be sent to 650 RCW members as a BOLO-Be on the Look Out.
The 100 Mile RCMP detachment has noted it is acceptable to install the cameras on your building. The municipality will not be participating.
There is no privacy issue. That has been dealt with federally and provincially by the RCMP.
“THIS AREA UNDER SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS.” signs are all that is needed.
The security companies agree that the cameras need to be mounted strategically for suspect identification. All three companies offer an outdoor camera, good to -50 degrees that is flush with your building’s overhang.

If you use one recorder for 6 cameras and split the cost 10 ways the cost would be about $900.00 one time fee for the MTF system or $700.00 for Edwards. Note: Edwards doesn’t have the armoured dome and security brackets but may be able to provide.
There is no monitoring required. The system is digital. Data is easily retrieved and produce on a disc for the RCMP. There are no maintenance costs and any requested upgrades would be present by the system provider. Work and Play has volunteered to house the recorder.
For those concerned that crimes under $5,000.00 are not pursued by law enforcement, please be aware of Restorative Justice which processes offenders through a Circle of Justice system which requires the offender to face his/her victims and make restitution. Offences dealt with using Rest. Justice includes vandalism, shoplifting, theft and similar incidents. The re-offending rate under this system is very low.
